John Strain

Coach/Consultant

John has 30 years of law enforcement experience, having served with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and the Tustin Police Department. He earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from California State University, Long Beach.

John has worked in, supervised, and managed a wide range of divisions and functions, including Patrol Operations, Special Operations, Criminal Investigations, Homicide, SWAT, School Resource Officers, K9, Internal Affairs, Department Training, Public Information, and Personnel Management. He is a graduate of the California Police Officer Standards and Training (POST) Command College, Class #62.

In addition to his law enforcement career, John works as an adjunct professor and curriculum developer in criminal justice. He has taught in virtual, hybrid, classroom, and real-world environments to students in the United States and around the world.

John retired from law enforcement in 2019 after a cancer diagnosis changed his life and path forever. He is married to his best friend and “radio car partner for life,” Trish, a retired police dispatcher. They have two adult children, Kayla and Jake. John and Trish frequently travel in their motorhome—usually to beach destinations. John also enjoys golfing… sometimes, if he’s playing well.
