
Preparing For Supervision – San Mateo, CA
Chief Hamel (ret.) and Chief Celano (ret.) share their collective experience in the area of leadership and management to help you prepare for your promotional exam for first-line supervision.
The first segment of the course will cover the foundations of effective leadership and employee motivation, strategic decision-making, mitigating risk, and the role of coaching, mentoring and discipline. The second segment will provide an in-depth exploration of how to prepare for an oral interview or an assessment center, including how to anticipate and effectively respond to oral board questions, and what your boss will expect of you as a newly appointed supervisor.

Presenters

Retired Chief Charles F Celano Jr is a 27-year veteran of the Tustin Police Department. As Founder of Chief Leadership he has coached leaders from public safety organizations, private companies, as well as non-profits. He also has developed comprehensive leadership development programs and provided consulting on succession planning, strategic planning and workforce assessments.

Chief Mike Hamel (ret.) began his law enforcement career at LAPD in 1993. He laterally transferred to the Irvine Police Department in 1995, where he rose through the ranks, eventually assuming the role of Chief of Police in 2015, a position he held until he retired last year. His past assignments include FTO, Crimes Against Persons sergeant, SWAT team member, Patrol Sergeant, Detective Sergeant, Training and Recruitment Lieutenant, Commander and Deputy Chief. Mike holds a BA in Criminal Justice from UC Irvine and a MPA from Cal State Long Beach.
